2007 La Spinetta Barbaresco "Vigneto Starderi", Piedmont, Italy
ABOUT THIS WINE
Hailing from the renowned Starderi vineyard in Neive, this single-vineyard Barbaresco is crafted from old-vine 100% Nebbiolo, planted in limestone-rich soils at about 270 meters elevation. The 2007 vintage in Barbaresco was warm and early, resulting in wines with ripe fruit, ample texture, and an approachable but age-worthy structure.
La Spinetta employs meticulous vineyard practices—organic farming, aggressive green harvesting, and hand-harvesting—to ensure only the finest fruit reaches the cellar. Fermentation is conducted in rotary fermenters, a signature of La Spinetta’s modern style, followed by 22 months in 100% new French oak barriques. The wine is then bottle-aged for one year before release, allowing for further integration of flavors and structure.
This vintage is notable for its opulence and concentration, balanced by Nebbiolo’s hallmark acidity and aromatic lift. Over time, it develops savory complexity: balsamic, leather, crushed herbs, and iron nuances emerge as the wine matures in bottle.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
La Spinetta, under the visionary leadership of Giorgio Rivetti, has built a reputation for crafting some of Piedmont’s most expressive and polished wines. Originally focused on Moscato, the estate rose to international fame with its single-vineyard Barbarescos and Barolos, defined by a modernist style: powerful concentration, new oak integration, and a bold interpretation of Nebbiolo.
The winery works with some of the region’s top vineyard sites, including Starderi, and adheres to organic principles, low yields, and minimal intervention in the vineyard. Giorgio’s use of rotofermenters and French oak barriques marked a stylistic shift in the 1990s that helped reshape Barbaresco’s global image.
La Spinetta wines are instantly recognizable for their elegance and strength, often featuring Albrecht Dürer’s animal etchings on the labels—a symbol of their artistic and expressive intent. The estate continues to be a benchmark for lovers of structured, age-worthy Nebbiolo with a contemporary twist.
