2015 Demarie Roero Riserva, Piedmont, Italy
ABOUT THIS WINE
The Nebbiolo grapes used for this Riserva come from the Roero region, a small paradise made up of sandy dunes in yellow ochre clay tones. The juice is fermented in concrete tanks using local yeasts, with 20–25 days of maceration and manual punch-downs for extraction. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (30% new, 70% used). An additional 18 months of bottle refinement occurs before release.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Demarie is in Vezza d’Alba, in the heart of the ‘Roero’ just twenty minutes northwest of Barbaresco, it is a third-generation, family-owned and worked estate, where the terroir is not so different to its famed neighbors - Barolo and Barbaresco. The soils are a little lighter and, even now, mixed farming is common, the main crops being hazelnuts, vines, cereals and dairy. The regions’ post-war history has seen enormous change with a dramatic decline in the hazelnut sector and a large rise in viticulture. These changes have been mirrored in the Demarie operation. The farm has fourteen hectares of vineyards in Vezza, Castagnito, Castellinaldo and Guarene.
Brothers, Paolo and Aldo are fortunate to have different skills; Aldo prefers the cellar and vineyards, Paolo likes the travel and the office. Both not only share a passion for wine but also for constant innovation, concentrating firmly on environmental issues and projects involving their local community. Their love of Champagne has led to experimentation with sparkling wines made from Arneis, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Freisa; they also dabble with orange wines. These diversions have had a significant positive influence on the core wine production, it is an excellent and constantly evolving operation.
