2017 Elo Monastrell, Yecla, Alicante, Spain

ABOUT THE WINE

Made from 100% Monastrell (known elsewhere as Mourvèdre), the 2017 Elo is sourced from old bush vines planted at over 700 meters above sea level on rocky, limestone-rich soils in the Yecla DO of southeastern Spain. These dry-farmed vines are naturally low-yielding, resulting in concentrated fruit with vibrant acidity—essential for balance in the region’s warm, arid climate. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in neutral French oak barrels for around 12 months, allowing the grape’s wild character to shine. The 2017 vintage shows excellent development: black cherry, roasted thyme, smoked paprika, and graphite all emerge from the glass, while the palate offers both richness and freshness. Ideal with grilled lamb, charred vegetables, or spiced lentil stew.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Elo is a personal project by winemaker Eva López, who named the wine in homage to her father, Eloy. Her approach blends tradition with restraint, focusing on small-lot production from old vines in Yecla—an often-overlooked region with exceptional potential. Farming is organic, with minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar. Eva’s philosophy centers on preserving the identity of Monastrell, a variety long associated with the Levant, by showcasing its natural power alongside freshness and nuance. With Elo, she crafts a wine that’s both deeply rooted in place and modern in sensibility: expressive, honest, and age-worthy.
