2018 Trimbach "Cuvée Frédéric Emile" Riesling Grand Cru, Alsace, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

Exposed south and south-east, the Grands Crus Geisberg and Osterberg terroirs of Ribeauvillé which overlook the estate have given birth to this wine for several generations. The average age of the vines, around 45 years, offers limited yields. The marl-limestone-sandstone and shell limestone composition of the terroir (Muschelkalk), as well as the well-ripened grapes strictly selected by hand, give this wine a remarkable personality: a dry and powerful Riesling, underlined by a mineral note and with finely chopped acidity.

The grapes are crushed and delicately pressed in a pneumatic press, then vinified to dryness in stainless steel vats and old casks. No MLF, or long aging on lees in order to preserve freshness, liveliness and fruity aromas. The wine was bottled in spring. After seven years of aging in the cellar the wine expresses all its potential to develop further, expressing its terroir, with aging potential of 20+ years.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Maison Trimbach's viticultural origins date back to 1626, and since then, twelve generations of rigorous winemakers and Ambassadors devoted to the passion for Alsace wines have constantly distinguished themselves by the quality and authenticity of their wines, to patiently develop, from father to son, a solid reputation. The 13th generation joined the estate a few years ago. 

The climate is semi-continental: cold winters, hot and dry summers, sometimes stormy, and beautiful and dry autumns. The sunshine is optimal and the rainfall is very low because it is protected from oceanic influences by the Vosges mountains (in 2020 : Colmar 424 mm of water against 758 mm in Lorraine and 778 mm in France).

The vines planted on the sub-Vosges hills, on the slopes, have an essential impact on the quality of the grapes: drainage, less fertile soils, better exposure to the sun and ideal orientations : South, South-East, South-West.
All of these conditions thus contribute to the constitution of the inimitable characteristics of Alsace wines.
