2019 Roagna Barbera D'Alba, Piedmont, Italy

ABOUT THIS WINE

Sourced from old vines and guided by Roagna’s traditional, minimal-intervention philosophy, the fruit is hand-harvested and undergoes a long, classical vinification — with 30–60 days of skin contact under a submerged cap and spontaneous fermentation often anchored by a pied de cuve culture to emphasize native yeasts. The wine is then aged for several years in large neutral French and Slavonian oak botte, akin to the estate’s Nebbiolo approach, before release, resulting in a wine that is unfined, unfiltered, and deeply connected to its terroir.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Roagna is one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists, with a winemaking lineage dating back to the 19th century and a reputation for producing some of the region’s most soulful, long-lived expressions of Nebbiolo. Based in Barbaresco, with additional holdings in Barolo, the family-run estate is led by Luca Roagna, who upholds a rigorous commitment to natural viticulture and extended maceration techniques that capture both the structure and nuance of his crus.

The Roagna vineyards are all managed organically, with an emphasis on deep root systems, biodiversity, and low yields. In the cellar, nothing is rushed—fermentations are slow and natural, extractions gentle, and aging is done exclusively in large neutral oak to avoid masking the wine’s origin.

Roagna wines are benchmarks of purity, ageability, and site fidelity—crafted with a rare patience and restraint that puts them among the finest traditional producers not just in Barbaresco, but in all of Italy.
