2020 Cardedu Canonau di Sardegna "Caladu", Sardinia, Italy

ABOUT THIS WINE

“Caladu” is crafted from 100% Cannonau (Grenache), grown on the rugged hills of Sardinia’s Ogliastra region, just inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines are dry-farmed on decomposed granite soils at elevations of around 200–300 meters, where constant breezes and abundant sunlight result in healthy, low-yielding grapes with concentrated flavors and naturally balanced acidity.

The 2020 vintage benefited from a long, warm growing season and minimal disease pressure. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in cement vats. Maceration is gentle, and aging occurs in concrete, allowing the purity of fruit and terroir to shine without oak influence. The resulting wine is unfiltered, unfined, and low in sulfur—an authentic taste of Sardinia’s traditional viticulture.

“Caladu” means sunset in the Sardinian dialect—a nod to the wine’s sense of place and moment. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, spicy sausages, lentil stew, or aged pecorino. Serve with a light chill to emphasize its freshness.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Cardedu is a small, family-run estate located in the remote Ogliastra province of eastern Sardinia. Run by the Loi family for generations, the winery is deeply rooted in local tradition and agricultural integrity. They farm old vines organically (though not certified), and vinify with a natural, low-intervention philosophy that prioritizes transparency, energy, and sense of place.

Cardedu’s wines are known for their brightness, drinkability, and honest character. They produce only native varieties—Cannonau, Monica, Vermentino, and Nasco—using traditional Sardinian methods, including concrete fermenters and minimal handling. “Caladu” is a flagship red, expressing the full spectrum of Sardinian terroir with rustic charm and modern vibrancy.
