2020 Domaine Ostertag Riesling "Fronholz", Alsace, France 1.5L MAG
ABOUT THE WINE
This Fronholz bottling comes from a lieu-dit perched on the eastern edge of the Vosges, where sandstone and quartz soils deliver wines of finesse and mineral drive. The 2020 vintage was marked by balance and energy, and this wine channels both with remarkable poise. It’s fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised in large, old oak foudres, allowing full expression of site and vintage without interference. Aromatically, it shows layers of citrus blossom, green tea, ripe mirabelle plum, and crushed stone. On the palate, the wine is dry and racy, with firm yet elegant acidity and a fine, stony texture. It finishes with precision and persistence, showcasing the transparent beauty of Fronholz. Ideal with shellfish, cured trout, or dishes with subtle spice like Thai basil chicken or Vietnamese spring rolls.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
André Ostertag, one of Alsace’s most visionary winemakers, took over his family domaine in 1980 and brought with him a philosophy deeply rooted in biodynamics, artisanal craftsmanship, and a Burgundian sensitivity to terroir. Now under the stewardship of his son Arthur, Domaine Ostertag continues to champion the idea that wine should be a living reflection of place. Certified organic since 1998 and farmed biodynamically since 1997, the domaine embraces low intervention in the cellar: native yeast fermentations, minimal sulfur, and aging in old oak barrels. Their approach yields wines of nuance, vitality, and soulful depth, with each cuvée offering a distinct narrative of its vineyard origin. The Fronholz vineyard, in particular, is a recurring theme in Ostertag’s work—viewed as a site of inner light and clarity, producing wines of meditative intensity.
