2020 Pionero Baja California, Mexico

ABOUT THE WINE

The 2020 Pionero is a red blend—often centered around Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Grenache, depending on the vintage—sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in the Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s leading wine region. The arid climate, cooling Pacific breezes, and granite-rich soils produce fruit of remarkable concentration and character.

Fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, the wine undergoes partial aging in used French oak barrels for 10–12 months, balancing ripe fruit with savory complexity. Aromas of cassis, dried fig, and sweet spice are accented by hints of rosemary, cedar, and dusty earth. The structure is smooth and generous, with just enough acidity to lift the dark fruit core and a lingering note of cocoa and sea breeze salinity. It's a perfect pairing for grilled meats, mole poblano, or rich vegetarian dishes like stuffed peppers or lentil stew.
