2020 Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, Tuscany, Italy
ABOUT THIS WINE
Vinified through the ancient “Governo Toscano” method with Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile grapes slightly over-ripe by drying, it ages for 24 months in barrels, large and small, and then refines at least 12 months in glass. The 2020 vintage was simply as complicated as its time: late frosts, humid spring, summer with peaks of extreme heat and hail, with a rainy season finale. Through stubbornness and experience, together with nature’s magic, the winemakers have created wines that are nevertheless profound and round, although turned to the subtle side of wine.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Salcheto winery in Montepulciano, led by oenologist Michele Manelli, has become a pioneer in sustainable winemaking. The estate minimizes environmental impact through innovative practices such as using natural daylight instead of electric lighting in the cellar, reducing water use, and monitoring biodiversity. It was the first winery to certify the CO₂ footprint of its bottles and was named Green Winery of the Year 2014.
Since 1987, Salcheto has focused mainly on the Prugnolo Gentile grape (local Sangiovese), using traditional methods with natural yeasts and no added sulphur. Its flagship wine, Vino Nobile Salco Evoluzione, reflects the success of its biodynamic approach and is released six years after harvest.
The winery continues to innovate, introducing one of the lightest eco-friendly wine bottles and earning the Robert Parker Green Emblem in 2021 for its commitment to sustainability. Powered entirely by renewable energy, Salcheto also recycles water and maintains vineyards and willow trees to offset emissions.
