2021 Alberto Orte "Escalada do Sil Tinto", Valdeorras, Spain

ABOUT THE WINE

Sourced from high-altitude, terraced vineyards in Valdeorras, Escalada do Sil Tinto is a blend of mostly Mencía with small amounts of Merenzao, Brancellao, and other native red varieties. The vines, some up to 100 years old, grow on slate and granite soils above the Sil River. The steep terrain requires hand farming and minimal intervention.

The 2021 vintage saw a long, cool growing season that preserved aromatic complexity and freshness. Grapes are fermented with native yeasts and partial whole clusters in open-top fermenters, then aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Expect aromas of red and black berries, black tea, mountain herbs, and graphite. The palate is linear and focused, with lively acidity and mineral depth.

Escalada do Sil is his tribute to the mountain vineyards of Valdeorras—wines shaped by altitude, slate, and a deep respect for the past.
