2022 Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Echézeaux Grand Cru, Burgundy, France
ABOUT THE WINE
Sourced from Rouget’s small parcel within the Echézeaux Grand Cru—near the prestigious climats of Les Rouges du Bas and Les Champs Traversins—this wine is the product of meticulous vineyard care and intuitive, low-intervention winemaking. The vines, inherited from Rouget’s legendary uncle, Henri Jayer, are cultivated with a philosophy of minimal chemical use, low yields, and intense focus on vine health and phenolic maturity.
The 2022 vintage offered a near-ideal growing season: sunny but not excessively hot, with well-timed rainfall and healthy fruit at harvest. Emmanuel Rouget and his sons chose optimal ripeness over opulence, picking at the perfect moment for freshness and purity.
Vinification followed the domaine’s hallmark approach: 100% destemmed fruit, native yeast fermentation, gentle extraction, and aging in French oak barrels—about 50% new—for 18–20 months. The result is a wine of textural finesse and aromatic purity, combining the richness of the vintage with the understated elegance that defines Rouget’s house style.
Expect layers of wild berries, blood orange, rosehip, and delicate spice, supported by chalky tannins and a lifted, mineral finish. This Grand Cru will reward patient cellaring over 15–25 years, but its clarity and charm are already evident. Pair with refined dishes such as duck breast with cherry reduction, pigeon with truffle jus, or delicate game birds.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget stands as one of Burgundy’s most revered and quietly influential domaines. Nephew and spiritual heir to the iconic Henri Jayer, Rouget inherited not only legendary parcels in Echézeaux, Vosne-Romanée, and Cros Parantoux, but also a winemaking philosophy rooted in purity, restraint, and absolute respect for terroir.
Based in Flagey-Échézeaux, the estate is now a collaborative effort between Emmanuel and his sons, Nicolas and Guillaume, who have carried on the uncompromising standards set by their father and great-uncle. Farming is done sustainably with a near-organic approach, though without formal certification. In the cellar, extraction is gentle, oak is used judiciously, and the goal is always to preserve elegance over density.
Rouget’s wines, especially from Grand Cru sites like Echézeaux, are highly sought after for their poise, silkiness, and aromatic precision. The 2022 Echézeaux continues this legacy—a wine of purity and patience, crafted in the spirit of quiet mastery.
