2021 Luis Seabra "Xisto Ilimitado" Tinto, Douro, Portugal
ABOUT THIS WINE:
The 2021 Luis Seabra Xisto Ilimitado Tinto is a field blend from some of the best vineyards in the Douro Valley, with a focus on indigenous Portuguese varietals like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. The vineyards are located in Cima Corgo. This is a subregion that experiences extreme highs and lows from a temperature standpoint, with some of the greatest day-night temperature delta in Portugal. As such the fruit experiences extended hangtime. Vines are planted exclusively in yellow schist soil at 400-600 m. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation with wild yeasts in open lagares (traditional granite fermentation tanks). Maceration is in lagare for 8 days, then in vats for 20 days. The wine is then aged in old oak barrels for 1 year, followed by 5 months in tank to preserve its freshness and express the unique terroir of the Douro. The result is a wine of great elegance and depth, with a clear sense of place.
