2021 Paysan "P’tit Pape", Central Coast, California, USA

ABOUT THIS WINE

Le P'tit Pape is produced from grapes that are sourced from four vineyard sites in Monterey, San Benito counties, with soils based on granite and/or siliceous components. The 2021 vintage is a blend of 47% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 6% Counoise. Picked at moderate sugars, fermented in several lots ranging from 0-50% whole cluster with native or cultured yeasts depending on the lot. Fermented to dryness on skins. Aged in predominantly neutral, and a handful of once and twice used, barrels and puncheons for 11 months.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Le P’tit Paysan is a small producer focused on showcasing the quality and diversity of the wines that Monterey and the nearby AVAs can create. Ian Brand is the owner and winemaker. He is known for his progressive approaches in the vineyard, his commitment to organic farming as well as his excitement for Monterey being an excellent terroir in California. Brand looks for shallow, rocky soils, good site selection and proper varietal match with the soil and climate. The often overlooked greater Monterey Bay Area has a plethora of under appreciated, rocky vineyards, many of which contain a high proportion of limestone.
