2022 Ancient Oak "Siebert Ranch" Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, California
ABOUT THE WINE
Grown on the Siebert Ranch, Ancient Oak’s estate vineyard nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley, this Chardonnay benefits from the region’s hallmark fog-cooled mornings and diurnal shifts that preserve freshness and extend hang time. The 2022 vintage was marked by a mild growing season, which allowed for slow, even ripening and concentrated flavor development.
The fruit was hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented with native yeasts, then aged in a mix of neutral and lightly toasted French oak barrels. Partial malolactic fermentation was employed to soften acidity without sacrificing vibrancy. The result is a layered and textural Chardonnay—creamy yet restrained, with an emphasis on site expression rather than overt oak or butter. It pairs beautifully with dishes like roast chicken with tarragon, grilled halibut, or a soft-ripened cheese like Brie de Meaux.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Ancient Oak Cellars is a small, family-run winery based in Sonoma County, named after the centuries-old oaks that surround its Siebert Ranch estate. Led by Melissa Moholt-Siebert, the winery specializes in estate-grown, small-production wines that reflect both the site and vintage. Their winemaking philosophy centers on sustainable farming, native fermentation, and minimal intervention in the cellar.
While not certified organic or biodynamic, Ancient Oak employs many eco-conscious practices—such as sheep grazing in vineyards, cover cropping, and low-input viticulture—under the Fish Friendly Farming certification. Their approach is grounded in respect for land and tradition, crafting wines that are expressive, balanced, and firmly rooted in the character of their estate. The Siebert Ranch Chardonnay exemplifies their commitment to precision, transparency, and the nuanced beauty of Russian River fruit.
