2022 Brunia White, Sondagskloof, Walker Bay, South Africa
ABOUT THE WINE
Brunia White 2022 is a refined blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%) sourced from the cool-climate Sondagskloof ward within Walker Bay—an area marked by strong maritime influence, wild fynbos, and shale-derived soils. The Sauvignon Blanc contributes precision, citrus lift, and a saline edge, while the Semillon brings textural depth and subtle richness.
Fruit was hand-harvested and sorted, then gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation occurred with native yeasts, and the wine was matured in old French oak barrels for 9 months, allowing subtle oxidative development while preserving purity. No acidification or fining took place, reflecting a low-intervention ethos.
Brunia White speaks to site transparency and restraint, evoking a sense of place through clarity, freshness, and structure. Its herbal and mineral nuances pair beautifully with West Coast oysters, grilled langoustine, or dishes with preserved lemon and herbs.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Brunia Wines is a small, family-run project rooted in the remote, wind-swept hills of Sondagskloof, a hidden subregion of South Africa’s Walker Bay. Founded by the Winshaw family, Brunia is named after the indigenous Brunia shrub that thrives in the local fynbos, symbolizing the winery's deep connection to its unique environment.
Committed to organic and regenerative farming, the team cultivates vineyards with minimal intervention, encouraging biodiversity and preserving natural soil health. The winemaking is hands-off, guided by intuition and terroir expression rather than formula.
Brunia stands out for its focus on cool-climate wines with tension, purity, and energy, offering a South African expression that echoes the restraint and age-worthiness found in the best of the Old World.
