2022 Domaine Comte Georges De Vogüé Grand Cru Bonnes Mares, Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

Occupying 2.7 hectares on the Chambolle side of Bonnes-Mares, Domaine de Vogüé’s parcel includes both terres rouges (clay-rich soils) and terres blanches (limestone-dominant), offering a balanced expression of power and finesse. The 2022 vintage, with its warm yet even growing season, provided fruit of great ripeness and precision. Vines average 40+ years of age, producing low yields of concentrated Pinot Noir.

Vinification is traditional and meticulous: whole clusters may be used depending on the vintage’s nature, fermentation is with native yeasts, and extraction is gentle and slow. The wine is aged for around 18 months in French oak barrels (about 30% new), allowing the terroir to take center stage. In the glass, it reveals layers of blackcurrant, violet, graphite, and spice, underpinned by a taut structure and a cool, limestone-driven backbone. This is a wine that will evolve over decades, ideally paired with refined game dishes, duck with cherry reduction, or aged hard cheeses.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of the most revered names in Burgundy, with an unbroken lineage in Chambolle-Musigny dating back to 1450. The estate holds some of the most prestigious vineyard holdings in the village, including monopole control of Musigny and key parcels in Bonnes-Mares. Today, the domaine is helmed by winemaker Jean-Luc Pépin and vineyard manager François Millet (now succeeded by successors who maintain his vision), continuing its legacy of classical, age-worthy wines rooted in Chambolle’s identity.

Farming is meticulous and sustainable, guided by a deep respect for the land and vintage variability. In the cellar, the style is restrained and terroir-focused—eschewing excess in favor of purity and longevity. The Bonnes-Mares stands apart within the portfolio for its gravitas, tension, and breadth, showing the domaine’s ability to balance structure with grace—an unmistakable hallmark of great Burgundy.
