2022 Domaine Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Climats d'Or", Burgundy, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

The “Climats d’Or” is a unique cuvée that blends fruit from several Premier Cru sites within Morey-Saint-Denis—specifically chosen for their biodynamic farming and expressive terroir. These include parcels like Les Chaffots, Les Ruchots, and Clos Baulet, located mid-slope on the Côte de Nuits and known for their mix of limestone and clay soils. In 2022, a warm and balanced growing season produced wines of generosity with lifted aromatics and fine structure.

Domaine Michel Magnien—certified biodynamic (Demeter)—employs a minimalist, terroir-first approach in both vineyard and cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with native yeasts, and vinified with a proportion of whole clusters for added aromatic complexity. Aging is done partly in amphorae and neutral oak barrels, allowing purity and minerality to lead.

Expect vibrant red and black fruits, forest floor, crushed stone, and subtle violet and pepper notes. This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, game birds, mushroom-driven dishes, and aged cheeses. Decanting is recommended if enjoyed young; cellaring for 8–15 years will reveal even greater nuance.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Michel Magnien is a benchmark biodynamic estate in the Côte de Nuits, rooted in Morey-Saint-Denis and now led by Frédéric Magnien, who represents the fifth generation of the family lineage. Under Frédéric’s stewardship, the domaine has transitioned fully to biodynamic viticulture and a low-intervention winemaking philosophy that seeks to reveal each vineyard’s voice with clarity and authenticity.

Frédéric is known for his innovative use of clay amphorae alongside traditional oak barrels, allowing him to fine-tune texture while preserving freshness and mineral expression. All wines are fermented with native yeasts, bottled without fining or filtration, and see minimal sulfur use. The “Climats d’Or” cuvée exemplifies the estate’s vision: a seamless expression of Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru terroirs, biodynamic precision, and Burgundian elegance.
