2022 Rodrigo Mendez & Alberto Orte "Muti" Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain

ABOUT THE WINE

“Muti” is the result of a collaboration between Rodrigo Méndez, known for his work with Forjas del Salnés, and Alberto Orte, the visionary behind rare, site-specific Spanish wines. This Albariño is sourced from older vines in inland Meaño, a subzone of Val do Salnés in Rías Baixas, where the cooling Atlantic influence is balanced by granite-rich soils and elevated, dry-farmed vineyards.

The 2022 vintage was marked by a cooler growing season, favoring precision and aromatic lift. Fermentation with native yeasts in neutral foudre followed by extended lees aging brings texture and complexity without masking the grape’s inherent vibrancy. The wine is dry, focused, and quietly complex—showing citrus peel, white peach, wet stone, and a delicate herbal note, all woven into a lithe, mineral frame.

A thoughtful Albariño meant for more than just casual sipping, it shines with seafood crudo, marinated shellfish, grilled octopus, or aged Manchego.

ABOUT THE PRODUCERS

Rodrigo Méndez, a champion of Galician terroir, is known for elevating Albariño and indigenous red varieties through low-intervention, terroir-first winemaking at Forjas del Salnés. Alberto Orte, co-founder of Olé & Obrigado and an advocate for recovering historic Spanish sites and varieties, brings a scholarly, detail-oriented approach to viticulture.

Their joint project, “Muti,” focuses on crafting age-worthy Albariño from singular plots with structure and identity—eschewing commercial, stainless-steel freshness in favor of something deeper and more textural. Both producers share a commitment to organic farming, native fermentations, and minimal intervention, resulting in a wine that bridges traditional methods with a modern sensibility rooted in place.
