2024 Terenzuola "Fosso Di Corsano" Vermentino, Colli Di Luni, Tuscany, Italy
ABOUT THIS WINE
There are very few wine appellations in Italy that actually span more than one region. Colli di Luni is one. Comprised of a very narrow spit of undulating coastline, it starts on the Ligurian Riviera and ends in Tuscany, just north of Pisa. On either side are the Apennine mountains and the Ligurian sea. While the savory, fun reds of the Colli di Luni can approximate Chianti, albeit on a minor scale, it’s the whites that really stand out as they can boast all the rich fruit and texture one associates with warm, sunny Tuscany, but with the Ligurian coast’s crunchy saltiness and high level of finishing minerality. With a cellar on the Ligurian side but vines that straddle both provinces (and in the Cinque Terre) lies Terenzuola, the small organic farm of the Giuliani family.
This wine is 100% Vermentino from massal selections located in the municipality of Fosdinovo, at an altitude between 250 and 420m above sea level. The five hectares vineyard is divided into 16 smaller plots. The soil, with an acidic pH, is schist and rocky, rich in iron oxide and carbonates. Grapes are harvested by hand from mid-September to mid-October and carried out in 2 or 3 rounds per row according to the ripening pattern. Terenzuola uses soft systems for receiving the grapes, cold maceration, fermentation in controlled temperature, divided into the different plots, with aging on its lees in stainless steel vats for 6 to 8 months.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
The Terenzuola estate was founded in Fosdinovo, in the heart of the Colli di Luni, 350 meters above sea level and just minutes from the coast. Its story began in the early 1930s, when Luigi Giuliani returned from New York after the Great Depression and purchased a small hillside property, cultivating vines, olives, vegetables, and honey for both family use and local markets. In 1993, the current owner, Ivan Giuliani moved to Fosdinovo and began making wine while completing his studies. A formative experience during his military service strengthened his connection to the land and led him to pursue winemaking as a lifelong path. He developed his own style, expanding vineyards across Fosdinovo, Castelnuovo, and Sarzana.
The 1999 harvest marked the start of a major expansion, including new vineyards and the renovation of the winery. By 2007, the estate had grown from 3 to over 15 hectares, extending across the historic Lunigiana region—from the Apuan Alps to the Cinque Terre—and strengthened through a partnership with local farmer Marco Nicolini.
Terenzuola's philosophy is rooted in respect for nature. They work in harmony with the seasons, prioritizing soil health, low-impact treatments, and traditional high-density planting. Using cuttings from their century-old vines and maintaining low yields, they aim to express the true character of the land in every wine.
The Colli di Luni DOC is half in Liguria, half in Tuscany, and is one of the very few Italian DOCs that cover two regions. In this area, Terenzuola is particular because, unlike other producers, it is the only one that has all of its Vermentino vines on hills at 300-500 meters of altitude. Terenzuola's wines actually need a little time in the bottle to show their best and are able to age well for 3-4 years, improving their characteristics of elegance and sophistication. Its terrain is calcareous mixed with clay planted with high-density vineyards. The high altitude allows for a wide variation in temperature from day to night. All of these conditions give the wine a rare, highly mineral, and structured elegance.
