2023 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Burgundy, France

ABOUT THE WINE

Produced from a tiny 0.24-hectare parcel in Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet—the smallest of the white Burgundy Grand Crus—this wine is a standout of the domaine’s range. The 2023 vintage brought freshness and balance, ideal for expressing the vineyard’s naturally generous character through the lens of Fontaine-Gagnard’s restrained style.

Hand-harvested Chardonnay is gently pressed and fermented with native yeasts, then aged in French oak barrels, a modest portion of which are new. The result is a wine of impressive depth and refinement, with notes of stone fruit, citrus oil, hazelnut, and baking spice supported by vibrant acidity and a firm mineral core.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, is one of Burgundy’s most respected white wine producers. Run by Céline Fontaine, the estate is known for its precise, terroir-transparent Chardonnays from a wide range of top vineyard sites, including several Grand Crus. Farming is lutte raisonnée (sustainable), and winemaking is traditional and low-intervention, allowing each site’s character to shine. The Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the domaine’s crown jewel—rare, refined, and profoundly expressive.
