2023 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru “Caillerets”, Burgundy, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

Les Caillerets is widely considered one of Volnay’s greatest Premier Cru vineyards—often regarded as the village’s unofficial Grand Cru. Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s holdings in this lieu-dit sit on thin, chalky soils rich in limestone scree (cailloux), which impart unmistakable minerality and finesse to the wine. These elements, coupled with the site's elevation and drainage, make for one of the domaine’s most elegant and long-lived cuvées.

In 2023, a moderately cool growing season with well-timed ripening allowed for slow, even phenolic development. Fruit was hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in French oak barrels (typically ~15–20% new), with no fining or filtration. As always, vinification was gentle and precise, aimed at preserving the nuance and structural clarity of the terroir.

The resulting wine is lithe yet persistent—silken red fruit, floral lift, and hints of tea leaf and crushed stone unfold over a frame of refined tannins and linear acidity. This cuvée stands out for its grace and verticality. Enjoy with roasted game birds, veal, or earthy vegetable dishes. While already expressive, it will reward careful cellaring over 10–20 years.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of the most revered and influential domaines in Burgundy, with a legacy in Volnay dating back to the early 19th century. Under Guillaume d’Angerville’s direction, the estate has become a leader in biodynamic viticulture, certified since 2006, and a benchmark for purity, transparency, and site-driven expression.

The domaine’s approach is defined by meticulous vineyard work, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a deep respect for tradition. Each parcel—whether Bourgogne or Premier Cru—is treated with equal care, allowing the voice of the vineyard to guide the winemaking.

Caillerets is among the most refined expressions in the estate’s lineup: a wine of lifted aromatics, mineral tension, and quiet depth. In 2023, it speaks with clarity and precision—a Volnay of subtle power and enduring elegance.
