2023 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre “Les Romains”, Loire Valley, France
ABOUT THIS WINE
Les Romains is one of Domaine Vacheron’s most iconic parcels, named for the ancient Roman road that once crossed the site. Planted exclusively to Sauvignon Blanc on silex (flint) soils, this cuvée captures the mineral essence that defines great terroir-driven Sancerre. Organically and biodynamically farmed, the vines are deeply rooted in this distinctive terrain, imparting an unmistakable gunflint aroma and linear structure. The 2023 vintage was fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral oak and aged on fine lees, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity and tension. Citrus-driven with nuances of lemongrass, chalk, and wet stone, it’s a quintessential food wine—ideal with shellfish, chèvre, or delicate vegetable dishes.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine Vacheron stands among the elite producers of Sancerre, revered for its biodynamic viticulture and parcel-by-parcel expression of terroir. Now in the hands of cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, the family estate has shifted focus to single-vineyard bottlings and Pinot Noir as well as Sauvignon Blanc. Their meticulous approach in both vineyard and cellar showcases Sancerre’s limestone and silex diversity with rare precision. Eschewing synthetic chemicals, Vacheron’s commitment to biodiversity and minimal intervention results in wines of vibrancy, clarity, and longevity. Les Romains remains one of their most distinctive wines, encapsulating the soul of flinty Sancerre.
