2024 Matassa Blanc, Vin de France, Roussillon, France
ABOUT THIS WINE
Matassa Blanc is typically a blend of Grenache Gris and Maccabeu, sourced from old vines grown on schist and marl soils in the hills above Calce, near the Spanish border. Farmed biodynamically and harvested by hand, the 2024 vintage reflects a cool, balanced growing season that preserved freshness and aromatics.
Grapes are fermented with native yeasts—some on skins, some direct-pressed—then aged in neutral vessels (usually large foudres or demijohns). No fining, no filtration, and minimal sulfur are used. The result is a complex, low-intervention white with savory depth and vivid minerality. Expect notes of citrus, chamomile, orchard fruit, and sea spray, carried by a fine phenolic grip and electric acidity.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine Matassa was founded in 2003 by New Zealand-born winemaker Tom Lubbe, who has become a leading figure in France’s natural wine movement. Working from old, dry-farmed vineyards in Roussillon, Lubbe focuses on indigenous varieties, low yields, and zero-additive winemaking to express the rugged beauty of the region with honesty and precision. Matassa wines are known for their wild aromatics, fine textures, and vibrant energy—wines of place, made with purpose.
