Matassa Rouge is typically a blend of Carignan and Grenache Noir from biodynamically farmed, old vines rooted in schist and limestone soils near the village of Calce in Roussillon. Grapes are hand-harvested and whole-cluster fermented with native yeasts in concrete or large old barrels.

Vinified with minimal extraction and no additives—no fining, no filtration, and little or no added sulfur—the wine is vibrant and unadorned. Domaine Matassa was founded in 2003 by Tom Lubbe, a New Zealand-born winemaker who settled in the rugged hills of Roussillon to craft wines of place with minimal intervention.
