2020 Maison Jaffelin Monthelie 1er Cru "La Taupine", Burgundy, France
ABOUT THIS WINE
Crafted from Pinot Noir grown in the Premier Cru La Taupine vineyard in Monthelie—just west of Meursault—this 2020 release reflects both the elegance of the Côte de Beaune and the particular charm of this high-altitude, east-facing site. The vines, rooted in clay-limestone soils, benefit from excellent drainage and cooler microclimates, contributing to the wine’s brightness and aromatics.
Vinification was carried out with minimal intervention: cold maceration to gently extract color and aroma, followed by fermentation in open tanks and aging in French oak barrels (a portion new) for approximately 12 months. The resulting wine balances purity of fruit with Burgundian structure—expect notes of redcurrant, wild strawberry, and crushed herbs, wrapped in a silken texture and accented by hints of white pepper and forest floor.
Maison Jaffelin practices sustainable viticulture and places strong emphasis on preserving vineyard identity in their vinification. This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, roasted quail, mushroom risotto, or mild alpine cheeses.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Maison Jaffelin, founded in the heart of Beaune in the 12th century, is among the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. While its scale remains intimate compared to larger négociants, Jaffelin distinguishes itself with its artisanal, micro-négociant approach. All wines are vinified in the historic cellars of the Collégiale Notre-Dame, using small-batch methods that emphasize precision and terroir expression.
Over the past two decades, the house has undergone a renaissance, embracing modern equipment and techniques while remaining deeply rooted in Burgundian tradition. Their focus is on sustainability, quality over quantity, and showcasing lesser-known appellations with the same care as Grand Crus. Jaffelin's wines are known for their purity, detail, and food-friendly structure—capturing the soul of Burgundy one parcel at a time.
